Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland
One of the 20 Surreal Places in the World
Sculptured out of volcanic activity and thousands of years in the making, it is named as one of the 20 surreal places in the world. Wai-O-Tapu is considered to be New Zealand’s most colourful and diverse geothermal sightseeing attraction.
You are introduced to a uniquely different landscape with features including the world famous Champagne Pool, Bubbling Mud Pool, Steaming Ground, sinter terrace formations and huge Volcanic Craters.
The area centres around Rotorua, stretching south to the mountains of Tongariro National Park then east to bay of Plenty’s White Island – an active and accessible volcano island. Clearly defined tracks provides the visitor the opportunity to enjoy a series of different walks taking from 30 to 70 minutes or more with their own unique features to fascinate all ages.
The natural bush setting adds another dimension to the experience as does the Lady Knox Geyser which erupts daily at 10.15 am to heights of up to 20 meters. The modern Visitor Centre has a wide range of New Zealand souvenirs and a cafe which has internal and external dining areas.
